Introduction
In 2019, Stellenbosch University (SU) embarked on a journey to revolutionise academic delivery through the expansion of its hybrid learning (HL) mode of delivery. This innovative approach combines sustained periods of fully online learning with fewer/shorter, yet highly engaging and interactive periods (‘calendar blocks’) of on-campus (face-to-face) contact sessions, offering flexibility while catering to the unique needs of South African and African learners. As one of SU’s strategic objectives, HL not only extends the University’s reach but also enriches the teaching, learning and assessment experience for students.
Bridging Worlds
SU’s commitment to HL is evident in its diverse array of offerings. The most recent call for proposals (April 2023) resulted in a number of new HL postgraduate programmes being nominated by faculties. After extensive review by the HL steering committee, offerings that were rewarded HL funding include the redesign of a postgraduate diploma (PGDip) in Environmental Management (for 2025 implementation), the gradual development of a new structured MSc in Bioinformatics of Infectious Diseases and Pathogen Genomics (for 2025 implementation) and three modules which will form part of the structured M.Eng in Chemical Engineering (for 2024 implementation). The first two mentioned offerings, while primarily housed within their respective main faculties, are inherently inter- and transdisciplinary, as they involve collaboration with various faculties in both content development and presentation. This collaborative approach enhances the richness and depth of the learning experience for students, as they are exposed to diverse perspectives, methodologies, and expertise from multiple disciplines.
Since its inception, SU has seen a remarkable surge in interest and engagement with HL, as evidenced by the following graph detailing the evolution of HL initiatives. This visual representation underscores the growing significance and popularity of HL and the HL modality within our academic community:
As part of our ongoing efforts, the HL team has diligently prepared for the handover of offerings after successfully completing their first implementation in HL format. These handovers serve a dual purpose: to facilitate a seamless transition between project phases and to ensure that all necessary information and resources are readily available for the continued success and sustainability of the offerings in the foreseeable future. Since the start of 2024, the HL team has successfully handed over the following offerings to the relevant departments: PGDip in Emergency Nursing, the multi-faculty, compulsory first-year Knowledge Skills module, the ePhys Upskilling Learning Units, and the Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Development.

Towards Inclusive Education: A New Frontier
Looking ahead, SU is poised to launch its latest StellenboschX offering, the Professional Certificate in Multilingual Mastery: Embracing Linguistic Diversity in the second half of 2024. Developed in collaboration with SU’s Language Centre, this certificate is designed to equip participants with a deep understanding of the value and significance of multilingualism in fostering connections, embracing diversity, and building inclusive communities. The certificate offers four interconnected courses that provide a holistic understanding of multilingualism and its role in fostering intercultural appreciation and collaboration. As SU continues to champion multilingualism, this initiative underscores the University’s commitment to inclusive education and global citizenship.
Conclusion
